October 2023 Monthly update @Languive: Why did I decide to abandon this idea?

Users feedback

  • Most potential clients ask about pronunciation correction which is pretty complex to build. I didn’t find any library doing that.
  • People are asking about gamification like in duolingo. I spent few days trying to split my app into some levels.
    – I wasn’t able to find an idea for the moment when the user could lose points since there is no answer key.
    – I only had the idea that the user would earn more points as he engaged in more and more conversations.

Possible pitfalls

  • After migrating to expo I’m using 3 external paid API’s (Google STT, TTS, OpenAI) -> makes it hard to set the price for the service and not underestimate it
  • I’m working on it 5 months and I still didn’t even start to try to implement it on IOs
  • A lot of developement until getting first paying customer (gamefication & found way to correct the pronounciation)
  • It looks like I’m failing ‘The mom test’ -> I hear a lot of positive feedback, but when I’m asking about using the app/ willing to pay for it I don’t see much desire
  • I want to try to think of a pivot and contact the languages school for some feedback, but to be honest I don’t really see any advantages for them right now.

What’s next?

That was my second failed business idea on this blog (6th overall). Of course I won’t stop there. I think I’m getting closer to the profitable business 😀
Now, I’m starting the next idea on my long list. I will describe it more in the next posts.
